
Economics & Finance:
THINKING WELL
This course introduces students to the academic study of economics and finance. We focus on mastering the key principles of the subject and mastering the art of writing persuasively on economic questions.
We will investigate the factors that drive a free-market economy and examine the tools governments use, with varying degrees of success, to increase efficiency, promote faster growth, mitigate inequality, produce public goods and correct externalities.
The course includes political economy, microeconomics, macroeconomics, growth theory, strategic game theory, mathematics-for-economics, public policy, and financial economics.

ECONOMICS & FINANCE: WRITING WELL
In order to cultivate the valuable skills of written English, students will be trained in how to write critical analysis of economic problems in a way which is concise, well-organised, robustly supported by evidence, and powerfully persuasive.
Our aim is to help students achieve high performance in elite essay competitions, and to be successful in writing for careers in academia, business and finance.


FACULTY
The Institute's July Summer Course in Nanjing, China will be taught by Martin Cox, John Locke Institute’s Director General, in partnership with distinguished professors from Britain and America’s most prestigious universities. Professors will include those who teach regularly for the John Locke Institute at our courses in Oxford, Princeton and Washington DC, accompanied by a team of talented and dedicated academic preceptors, who support our professors.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
OF A JLI STUDENT
Each day includes lectures on microeconomics, macroeconomics, game theory, public policy, and mathematics for economics, complemented by writing classes, assignments, and review sessions.
Students participate in precepts, interactive discussions, and group outings to foster collaboration. Highlights include a baseline test, research assignments, a debating competition, and a final exam. The program concludes with career-building lectures, a certificate ceremony, and a gala dinner, ensuring a well-rounded, enriching experience for all participants.

Accommodation is in shared rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Male and female students will stay in different rooms. Students will also be living with people of the same age. ​​
